Note
Tom Letford was my Great Grandfather. I was told that one of the toughest things he experienced in World War One was having to shoot his horse. Tom served in Egypt and Palestine in the Mounted Rifles. He had taken his faithful farm horse with him from Hastings. When the war was over, because of risk of diseases, the horses couldn't be brought home and Tom like many of his comrades couldn't bear the thought of his faithful beast being left to face who knew what kind of treatment by the Arab locals and so it was thought kinder to shoot the poor creature. Just heart-breaking after all they had been through together.
