Growing up I stayed many times with Uncle Jim and Aunty Jean and I remember my uncle as a loving, fun, caring man. But I always wondered why my Uncle seemed to have mood swings. It wasn't until after he had passed away that I realized the war had left an indelible mark on him which made his achievements after the war all the more remarkable considering the memories he was carrying. I love the record of his leadership in the history of the NZ Expeditionary force which records him starting a skirmish in Italy that the NZ forces eventually won even though Uncle Jim started the skirmish without realizing where the enemy was or the size of their contingent. Kia kaha, uncle Jim!
