My fathers period of overseas service was something he spoke little about. However the willingness of him and his brothers to commit themselves to the service of their country is something we could all continue to admire. Neither dad nor my mother (who also served as a WREN) ever spoke of any sense of adventure, in fact my mother was convinced that it was unlikely that she or her brothers would survive. Our generation have been the fortunate inheritors of the their willingness to perform their duty irrespective of the personal cost.
