Frederick was born on 28 July 1905 in Masterton.
He signed up to join the Army in Christchurch in September 1939 and entered Burnham Camp on 5 October as a private in the 20th Battalion. On 5 January 1940 they departed for Egypt on the ship Nieuw Amsterdam via Perth. It arrived in Egypt on 14 February. He was promoted to corporal on 23 November.
After service in various theatres he and others left Egypt on 15 June 1943 for Wellington, his war service being complete.
He died in Auckland on 24 May 1987 (suddenly), aged 81, a retired storeman. His ashes were buried beside his second wife Valerie's in Purewa Cemetery.
