'Jimmy' Cartwright was the apple of my late mother's eye. His photograph was on the mantlepiece when I was a child and remained prominent in her homes over many years. My younger brother, who was born shortly after my mother very belatedly discovered that Jimmy had died on D Day, was given the second name of Cartwright to memorialise his death and both my brother and I were sent to St Andrew's College in Christchurch because he had been a housemaster there. My mother obviously thought the world of him, as did our late father.
