Ernest Arthur George Holdgate

Uncle Erny as we called him was a very quiet unassuming man who never spoke about the horrors he saw in Gallipoli where he was wounded and repatriated back to the UK and when deemed fit was made the rank of Major and was then posted to France where he was wounded again and once again was repatriated to the UK where he was deemed unfit for further military service and was shipped back to NZ. There is a photo of him being presented with a service medal by King George 1. I am unable to find what that medal was , but is believed to be interned with him in his grave in the Timaru cemetery.
