MR. AND MRS. W.J. HENDLE FOUR SONS IN GREAT WAR Mr and Mrs William James Hendle, Pretoria Street, Lower Hutt are celebrating today the sixtieth anniversary of their wedding. Mr. Hendle was born in Wellington in 1857 and was the eldest son of Captain and Mrs. William Hendle, who came to New Zealand from England a few years previously.
Mrs. Hendle was born in Maidenhead, England, and came here as a young girl in 1874.
Four of Mr. and Mrs. Hendle's sons served in the Great War -
William and Leonard in the Samoan Advance Guard, and afterwards on Gallipoli, where they were joined by their brother, Ernest, who died there.
The other two went to France after the evacuation, where they were both killed. Leonard shortly before the Armistice was signed.
Mr. F. Hendle, of Feilding, who served in France was the only one to return.
