: Toti Tuhaka receives QSM
: Former navy diver, teacher & search &rescue worker Toti Tuhaka joked when congratulated on his Queen’s Service medal Mr Tuhaka prefers to stay out of the limelight, even though his contribution to Gisborne & East Coast communities has been considerable. Since he retired from the navy in 1958, Mr Tuhaka has taught at both the Girls’ and Boys’ High Schools, Lytton High School, Waikirikiri School, Campion College & Wellington Girls’ College. He also taught at the Wellington Activity Centre & Gisborne Activity Centre. “When I left the Gisborne Activity Centre, some of the students cried,” says Mr Tuhaka. “They gave me a picture of a whale diving.” Mr Tuhaka has helped trade school apprentices gain employment and has assisted ex-servicemen with their war pensions and allowances. He has extensive knowledge of te reo ake o Ngati Porou. As an RSA member he serves on committees that include the ex-Royal Navalmen’s Association of NZ & Malayan Veteran Forces in this region.
