Describe the image: Sgt Eric McGonigal is the shorter man in the front of the photo. The pilot was my uncle, P/O Francis Max McKenzie on the right of the photo. Their aircraft was shot down over Germany/Holland. Uncle Max held the plane steady so that all the other crew could jump out but sadly he went down with the plane. Eric survived and was captured and sent to Stalag 6. He survived that too and many years after his return bought an orchard in Miller’s Flat. He married my mother in 1967. He died of a stroke in 1982 and is buried in the RSA section of Kelvin Grove Cemetery, Palmerston North.
