He was 19 - he lied about his age so he could sign up. He was actually English, but was on a farming exchange in Ashburton, NZ when the war broke out. He had planned to bring his whole family over to NZ because he loved it so much, but was shot in the first wave onto the beach and died of his wounds in the boat back to NZ. He was buried at sea.
