: Rotohiko Michael Jones, enlisted February 29, 1916, at Narrow Neck Military Camp, aged 21, born at Poro-o-Tarao in the King Country, worked as a clerk and interpreter before enlistment. Michael Jones served on the Western Front in the first New Zealand Expeditionary Force from 1916 to 1919; he was a staff sergeant in the New Zealand Māori (Pioneer) Battalion. He was awarded the Military Medal for rescuing a wounded soldier under fire
