George Frederick Bertrand


: Colonel George Bertrand's father - Sgt George Bertrand.
: Colonel George Bertrand's father - Sergeant George Bertrand (born London about 1840- died New Plymouth District 1926). George Bertrand Snr, was born in London - the son of an English mother and a French father. George travelled alone to New Zealand from England - in 1856 - aged only 16 years after the death of his mother Sara Bertrand at England. George lived at Bell Block, New Plymouth with his Aunt and Uncle Rebekah and (later Captain) Charles Everett. During the New Zealand Land Wars George served with his Uncle - Captain Charles Everett - as a Colour Sergeant with the Taranaki Militia. He would later also serve with the Taranaki Volunteers and the Forest Rangers. George Bertrand would later own - with a fellow soldier veteran - a General Store and Post Office at Urenui, New Plymouth District. He died in 1926.
