He mihi tēnei ki a koutou katoa i runga i Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. Hei whakanui i tēnei wiki kua whakatūria tētahi whārangi ipurangi o ngā rangitahi, o ngā tūmahi me ngā ataata e whakanui ana i te reo Māori ki Tāmaki Paenga Hira.

Greetings to you all during Māori Language Week. To celebrate we’ve brought together a web page of blogs, activities and video exploring Tāmaki Paenga Hira’s connections to, and celebration of te reo Māori.

Two new karakia

Recently, we recorded two karakia in reo Māori to be played during the opening and closing of the Museum. In celebration of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, Gabriel Tongaawhikau and Bobby Newson discuss the importance of bringing this kaupapa to life.

Te Aho Mutunga Kore is our new textile and fibre knowledge exchange centre for Māori and Pasifika communities, launching in 2023 with the generous support of Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage.

I am lucky that all my mahi is in te reo Māori, all day, every day at the Museum. As writer/editor, I create text and content in te reo Māori for exhibition and gallery labels all around the Museum for te reo speakers to add more interpretation, stories, and details to all the English text you see in the Museum.

Before working here, whilst at university I was a translator contracted to different public and private-sector entities. But at the Museum I get to tell the stories of the Museum’s collections in te reo for te reo speakers.

At Tāmaki Paenga Hira I'm able to weave together my passions for technology, music and storytelling. From supporting the technical delivery of live music events, lectures, gallery exhibitions and digital experiences, it’s a role that is both multifaceted and culturally rewarding.

As a recording artist, a highlight for me was recording my first te reo Māori single release ‘E Kura’ on a world renowned Fazioli Grand Piano in the Museum's South Atrium. Not only did It signal the start of my te reo journey here at the Musuem, but it was also a way to inspire others to do the same.

He whakaahua tawhito nō ngā pūranga kōrero a Pacific Islands Education Resource Centre (PIERC) o te Tumuaki tuatahi o PIERC, a Le Mamea Taulapapa Sefulu Ioane i ngā tau 1970.

The textiles cases: a redress

Recently, Dr Kahutoi Te Kanawa, weaver and Pou Ārahi Curator Māori at Auckland Museum led a renewal of the textiles cases in Te Marae Ātea Māori Court. 

Along with a new selection of textiles are brand new labels in te reo Māori and English, which bring the taonga tuku iho (special knowledge and skills) of these garments and personal effects to life.

Tāmaki Paenga Hira are proud to host Te Wānanga Takiura o Ngā Kura Kaupapa Māori Aotearoa over 2 days of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. From Monday 11th to Tuesday 12th September, Māori Court will host the learning of te Reo Māori through the eyes of Takiura tauira and kaiako. For 2 days Te Wananga o Takiura akoranga will take place here at Tāmaki Paenga Hira. You are invited to join their lessons or to sit and listen in this immersive kaupapa Māori opportunity.
