Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira

"No one can help but be struck with awe, as they drive up to Auckland War Memorial Museum at the sight of this magnificent building. For me, not just the first time, but every time, and from whichever road or path I take.

Beyond the striking prominence of this huge and memorable building, there is a voluminous number of stories inside those imposing walls. They are our stories, for all New Zealanders. Stories that tell us our history in finer detail than most of us would ever need to know. Stories that show who we are, to visitors to our shores. Stories conveyed in exhibits. Stories told by myriad experts and by volunteers willing to answer every question.

Hesitate for a moment and ask “How ever did they create this generous, ever-enriching museum in the 1920’s?”.

A simple answer. To acknowledge those who fought, and to honour those who died, in World War One. Aucklanders of that era willingly gave what would amount to $50 per person in today’s money, to make this museum a reality.

When we visit the Museum, when we appreciate it, that serves as our thanks to those founders.

It’s for you, and all of us, to sustain and continue the giving principle which built Auckland’s greatest jewel, The War Memorial Museum."

Sir Don McKinnon

"The Auckland Museum is our nation’s biggest treasure house. Every donation, no matter what size, is a contribution of extraordinary value to the generations that follow us. The memories in the taonga and the War Memorial flow back and forth. We learn and lest we forget.”
