LATE 04: Innovate Media

LATE 04: Panellists and Artists

Thursday, 3 June 2010

What sort of news do we like to consume? A racy story on Sarah Ferguson’s exposé by an uncover reporter or a well-researched investigative article on BP’s petrol spill in the Gulf of Mexico? Amid cheers from the audience, panellist Dr Martin Hirst argued that we need less of the ‘populist Fergie’ and more informative journalism.

Late 04: Innovate Media debated the challenges facing broadcasters in an ever-changing digital landscape. Panellists included Dr Martin Hirst, AUT’s Association Professor of Journalism, Brent Impey, former CEO Mediaworks, Eric Kearly, TVNZ’s General Manager of Digital Services and Colin Peacock, host of Radio New Zealand’s Mediawatch. The often heated discussions ranged from the independence and profitably of content creators in the age of ‘open-source’ media to the challenges of sustaining quality programming in the digital age and the longevity of radio.

Following the debate, Little Bushman took to the stage to deliver a spellbinding performance preceded by an exceptional performance Jeremy Toy (Opensouls) and special guests.

This year's season of LATE at the Museum events welcomes a year-long investigation into the theme of innovation – featuring panel discussions with this country’s leading innovators and music by our top performers.

This month LATE at the Museum asks what a rapidly-changing digital landscape means for broadcasters, policy makers and of course us as audiences?

The evening will ask what is happening, and what needs to happen, to ensure the independence and profitably of content creators in the age of ‘open source’ media.

Is the Internet the friend or enemy of today’s broadcasters and journalists, and how can we sustain quality programming and reporting at a time when newsrooms are shrinking and people expect to read, hear and watch content for free?

Smart Talk

The evening features a panel discussion with Associate Professor of Journalism at AUT University, Dr Martin Hirst and guests. The discussion will be moderated by former editor of the New Zealand Listener and award-winning columnist Finlay Macdonald. View the panellists »
