Artefact

  • Public Access Text

''This long strip of white tapa is used in dance performances. It is worn over one shoulder and secured at the waist beneath the other. This is a typical example, with a fringe at each end made by cutting slits in the cloth. The fringes and the adjacent areas are decorated with finely drawn patterns in black, while the central section carries more sparse decoration. This was purchased at the 1992 Festival of Pacific Arts, Rarotonga, Cook Islands.

' Neich and Pendergrast, 'Pacific Tapa', 1997.
