Fan

human history
  • Other Name

    Fan (English)

  • Description

Fan. This is a hand held fan. It is flat in form and circular in shape with a slim cylindrical handle that begins from the centre of the blade and extends outwards. Two main material components make up this fan: dark black hibiscus baste and thin pinnules of naturally coloured tresses of the young, white part of the coconut leaf. The interior of the handle consists of a thin hard material to assist in reinforcing the handle.

The border of the iriba is made up of a wide band made from black dyed hibiscus fibre and coconut leaf fibre that has been woven together in a circular format. A second border that is thin in width and contrasts the portion of colour to the outer border separates the inner circle. The inner circular area of the fan's blade is made up of dyed pale pink and neutral white coconut leaf fibres that have been woven to form a surface design of curved diamonds that contrast in colour and feature upon the cross section of the circular area. The handle is in cased by a twill woven cover of dyed black hibiscus baste and coconut leaf fibre.
