Paopao model

human history

Paopao model. Canoe model. This model is made of wood and is an exemplar of the paopao. The liu (hull) is made from Tava (island lychee tree), and is a dark brown colour. Pule (decorative spikes) adorn the top of the stern. Two 'iato (booms) are fafau (lashed) to the liu with 'afa (sennit). The paopao model is badly damaged and is missing an ama (float), tu'itu'i (pegs) and half of the 'iato. The paopao is a type of outrigger canoe used by the Samoan population for every day fishing done closer to land. With the absence of ufi taumua (bow cover), ufi taumuli (stern cover) and their pu'oso(storage cavity) the paopao was not ideal for deep sea fishing expeditions or inter-island commuting.
