i Wau Culacula

human history

i Wau Culacula. Paddle shaped club. The i wau culacula is carved from kau (wood) with a head shaped into a broad, flat paddle blade, diamond in section and curved edges. A small perforation is visible at the tip of the blade. Wings have strengthening band, yet one side has broken off and been glued back together. The lower edges of the paddle blade head are serrated. Carved tavatava (zigzag) patterning covers wing, extending part way up blade and part way down shaft. The shaft is of oval section. The grip is carved with tavatava also. The butt is carved with a prominent rounded teke ni wau (carved cap). A hole is drilled through side of the butt. The i Wau Culacula is reddish brown in colour with some patina.
