Kali

human history

Kali. Headrest, component. Carved from solid kau (wood), long and curved at each end. Metal wire wrapped around one end. Two deep grooves carved into the length of the underside. Each side of the rest is notched along the length. Drilled converging holes on the underside indicate where two supports would have been attached with magimagi (coconut sennit). Fragments of fraying magimagi still wedged into the holes. One loose and separate support, triangular in shape (14190.2) has a drilled hole towards apex. Top of the apex was broken off and then reattached with four smaller drilled holes through which metal wire (headed through to secure the pieces together) secured the pieces together. The support and the rest are reddish brown in colour.
