Fa'alautaliga
Fa'alautaliga. Ear-shaped club. This fa'alautaliga is made from one piece of toa (iron wood). The handle of the fa'alautaliga is thin in comparison to the blade and is six-sided. At the base of the handle is a large triangular protrusion with a small suspension hole carved through it. The handle flares to a wide and flat blade with a round edge. The blade is the same deep dark brown colour as the handle and is adorned with mamanu (Samoan decorative motifs). The mamanu cover both sides of the entire blade and are comprised of triangular indents. The mamanu appear to be a darker shade of brown to the rest of the blade suggesting that it was deliberately stained to emphasize the design. Aside from the mamanu, the entire surface of the fa'alautaliga is very smooth. The fa'alautaliga is an 'au'upega (weapon of war) characterised by a large flattened head blade. The name fa'alautaliga refers to the shape of the blade. Taliga is the Samoan word for ear, therefore the blade can also be described as ear-shaped. Depending on the length of the handle the fa'alautaliga could be used both with one hand or two.
