Hoe

human history

Hoe. Carved ceremonial canoe paddle. This hoe (paddle) is carved from ra'au (hardwood) into a leaf shaped blade and long square-sectioned to'o (shaft). There is a small chip in the blade. The butt of the to'o is carved into a flat rectangular shape and all its surfaces elaborately carved into a frieze of stylised ti'i (ancestral human figures), eight in total. Perforations are visible on one surface of the butt due for suspension previously. The hoe is carved in fine geometric patterns arranged in compartments or bands over all the surface of the wood. The hoe is red brown in colour with a somewhat glossy patina.
