  • Description

    Hoe. Carved ceremonial canoe paddle. This hoe (paddle) is carved from ra'au (hardwood) into a long square-sectioned to'o (shaft) and a leaf-shaped blade, chipped at one side. Bands of fine geometric motifs are carved in light relief across all surfaces of the hoe. The to'o flares towards the butt end of the hoe elaborately carved into a conical shape depicting six stylised ti'i (ancestral human figures) in a concentric arrangement. A small cavity is visible on the butt.

    The hoe is a dark brown colour with a somewhat glossy patina.
