U'u

human history
  • Other Name

    War Club (English)

  • Description

U'u. War club. A highly sought after war club carved from 'aito (ironwood) into a bifacial head and long, cylindrical shaft. The top of the club is rounded and oval in section. Each side is carved into a stylised tiki (ancestral human) face, with each eye being a small carved tiki head. Several smaller tiki are incorporated into the design of this club head. A cross bar is carved across the width of the top portion of the club.

Finely braided nape (coconut sennit) is wrapped around the shaft at four separate locations, two bands of which have tufts of human hair incorporated into the lashing. The butt is convex, oval in section and has a drilled hole at its centre. At the top of the head there are seveal dents and markings visible on the surface of the wood. The 'U'u is dark in colour and has a glossy patina.
