    Paddle fragment (English)

  • Description

    Wooden fragment of a hoe (carved ceremonial paddle). The fragment is the grip end of a hoe incluing a short length of the to'o (shaft), which is square in section. The piece is trapezoidal in shape and rectangular in section. Surface of the ra'au (hardwood) is carved with geometric patterns in light relief detail with areas of open work carving. Carved stylised ti'i (ancestral human figures) are depicted in two rows of three.

    The hoe fragment is dark brown in colour with a glossy patina.
