  • Description

    Hoe. Carved ceremonial paddle. This hoe (paddle) is carved from ra'au (hardwood) into a teardrop-shaped blade with a long slender to'o (shaft), square in section. The butt is carved into a flat rectangular shape with all four sides depicting stylised ti'i (ancestral human figures) arranged carved in light relief. A small cavity in the ra'au is also visible at the centre of the butt. The hoe is carved in fine geometric patterns arranged in bands over all the surface.

    The hoe is red brown in colour with glossy patina.
