goddess figure

human history

carving of a goddess, wooden; heavy; dark-brown; wide across the shoulders; fingers and toes are formed by notched incisions; many indentations on forehead and sides of head - may be result of beating; very similar to 32651 (ethnology specimen).

The angular form imposed by carving in extremely hard wood became emphasized and developed as a positive sculptural quality.

Tongan, so called goddess; this image is from Lifuka, Ha'apai; collected by missionaries in 1830; images of this sort probably represented senior female lineage figures rather than goddesses; Tongan social structure places great emphasis on the senior female; it is likely that an especially dynamic person would be remembered if only as a means to keep the status of people associated with here.
