Hoe
human history
Hoe. Ceremonial paddle. The hoe is carved from ra'au (hardwood) into a long slender cylindrical to'o (shaft) and curved teardrop-shaped blade. Bands of fine geometric motifs are carved in light relief over all surfaces of the hoe including sun motifs on the blade and on the flat surface of the butt itself. The to'o flares towards the butt which is carved in a concentric series of eight stylised ti'i (ancestral human figures). The hoe is dark reddish brown in colour with a glossy patina.
