Anave

human history

Anave. Dance club. This is an anave made of wood. The anave is a natural brown colour with a smooth unpolished surface. The handle of the anave is cylindrical in shape and is undecorated. The handle then widens to a collar made of eight triangular nifo (teeth). All the nifo are intact, with four nifo on either side of the club. The collar then narrows to create the base of the diamond shaped blade. The blade itself is four-sided with a diamond cross-section. Adorning the blade are mamanu (Samoan decorative motifs) filled with white powder for decorative purposes. The anave are thought to be an introduced implement and used instead for entertainment purposes as opposed to war or combat.
