Paopao model

human history

Paopao model. Canoe model. This is a liu (hull) carved from one piece of wood for a paopao model. The liu is a dark brown colour with a smooth surface. Both sides of the liu are adorned with mamanu (Samoan decorative motifs). These mamanu are made of triangular indents. A few indents are filled with white powder for decorative purposes. This indicates that all the mamanu were once filled with the white powder but it has since fallen out over time leaving the mamanu bare. Each side of the hull has been drilled with four holes. These holes were used to fafau (lash) the 'iato (booms) to the liu using 'afa (sennit). A paopao is a type of outrigger canoe used by the Samoan population for every day fishing expeditions done closer to land.
