Te mwae

human history

Te mwae. Neck ornament. This has been made with te kakoko (young, white pinnule of the coconut tree), te buroa (small yellow cowrie), te kabunrere (shell with spotted patterns) and thread in blue and red. A plaited braid of te kakoko makes up the neck band of te mwae. Te buroa has been threaded onto the neck braid of te kakoko with blue thread. The shells are off-white and pale yellow in colour. They line the entire neck braid then form a pendant that hangs from the centre. The pendant is of te kabunrere and hangs from a braid of te kakoko and strands of blue thread. A hackle of loose fibre shows where te kabunrere is connected to the neck braid.
