Omore

human history

Omore. Long pole spear. This omore (spear) is carved from ra'au (hardwood) consisting of a leaf shaped blade, and very long cylindrical shaft with a cap of braided nape (coconut sennit) wrapped around the butt. The matai (spear head) resembles a leaf as it is a long, narrow diamond shape the surface of which is further carved in light relief with serrated chevron designs emanating from a raised central ridge running the length of the head to the apex. At the base of the spear head is a carved double collar feature which has decorative surface carving also. The omore is dark reddish brown in colour with a glossy patina. There is a hole perforated at the centre of the shaft possibly due to previous display.
