Ato
Ato. Bag. This is a hand-made ato of fala (pandanus). The ato is a natural brown colour adorned with beige coloured decorations made of fenū (young coconut frond). Varying weaving techniques have been used to create the ato. The base of the ato is a rectangular shape and uses a checkerboard design. The sides of the ato are woven using a zig-zag technique. The top edge of the sides are wrapped in fala to reinforce it as well as cover the ends of the woven fala. Two kau (handles) are attached to either side of the ato opening. These kau are also made of fala that has been braided using a fili lautolu (three-ply braid) technique. The word TOKELAU is made of fenū and sewn to the side of the ato. At the end of the word is a bouquet of woven flowers. The flowers are made of both fala and fenū and range in size and colour.
