Vaka akaraanga

human history

Vaka akaraanga. Model canoe. Small scale model of a singl hull outrigger canoe. Composite materials used in construction. Deep V shape of the bottom of the single hull implies the design of the vaka is ocean going. Triangular inlay of parau (pearl shell) along the sides of the vaka set into tamanu (mahogany) wood. Tamanu stern and bow covers. Fibre lashing, likely puru akari (coconut sennit). Two kiato (wooden strats) and a manu (brace) securing the middle of the hull. No ama (outrigger). Dark brown colour.
