Kai ni waerau
Kai ni waerau. Thatching awl. This is a tool made from the bill of te raku (swordfish). It is used for piercing te ira (pandanus leaf) and then inserting te noko (coconut midrib) and te kora (coconut sennit fibre cord). It is long and triangular in form. Its cross section is circular. One side of the exterior surface is smooth and dark brown in colour. Opposite this, it is made up of small, rough spikes in an off-white colour. The base of the triangular form appears broken with fibrous pieces in uneven lengths. The pointed end is blunt.
