Te mwae
Te mwae. Neck ornament. This is a neck ornament made from two-ply te kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage), te nana (coconut shell discs), te nouo (cone shell; conus) and wiin te kua kewe (porpoise teeth). Te nana and te nouo have been ground down to form the small circular discs. Te nana is dark brown and te nouo is off-white in colour. A circular perforation has been drilled in the centre where te kora has been threaded through. They vary in alternating pattern across the length of te mwae, some featuring more te nouo than te nana. The discs have been divided in sections by where the wiin te kua kewe has been threaded. The wiin te kua kewe are short in length, cylindrical in form with a short, polished point at one end and a stubbed or cut end at the other. Some are open ended where the internal hollow can be seen upon closer inspection. A circular perforation has been drilled into the stubbed or cut ends where te kora has been threaded through. They are off-white in colour.
