Te buangui

human history

Te Buangui. Whale's tooth ornament. This buangui (sperm whale tooth) is yellowed in colour with a highly polished surface. A perforation at its base is strung through with a fine cord of 2-ply te kora (coconut sennit). Buangui are accorded high value in I-Kiribati culture particularly as items of cultural exchange during important life rituals. This ornament would not have been for everyday use.
