Te rabatan te matau

human history

Te rabatan te matau. Shank. This is a component that would be used to complete a whole te matau (fish hook). It is made entirely from te kuano (phosphate). It has been ground into a length that is cylindrical in form. One end has been tapered. A drilled perforation has been made into the side. This would be for the purpose of inserting a line. The opposite end has been cut to show a circular cross-section. Three small furrows have been filed upon each side near the circular cross-section end. This would be for the purpose of attaching tabon te matau (point) with either te kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage) or thread. Its exterior is smooth in texture and hard in material. It is pale yellow in colour and dappled with opaque white lines.
