Te matau

human history

Te matau. Fish hook. This is made from three material components: te kuano (phosphate), te ri (bone) and thread. Te rabatan te matau (shank) is made from te kuano. It is pale yellow in colour, hard in material and portrays some transparency. It is cylindrical in form. One end has been tapered and curved off. A small circular perforation has been drilled through the side. This would be for the purpose of inserting a line. Opposite this end, notches have been filed out and a circular cross-section can be seen from beneath the binding of thread. Off-white coloured thread has been used to lash over the notched areas of te rabatan te matau to attach te tabon te matau (point). Te tabon te matau has been made from te ri. It shows a spatulate end that has notches carved out of it for binding thread over when joining it to te rabatan te matau. It also features a curved point that aligns with te rabatan te matau. It is smooth in texture and off-white in colour.
