Rabatan te kaneati
human history
Rabatan te kaneati. Shank component of a pearl shell fishing lure. This rabatan is cut and ground from the middle of a specimen of te bwaeao (pearl shell) spanning the length of hinge to the lip at approximately 62mm in length. A perforation is made through the hinge portion of the bwaeao. Two notches are made at the edges of the base end where the hook point would be lashed. The rabatan is rectangular in general shape and curved in profile. It is golden yellow in colour and has been polished to high sheen.
