Te katau te nana

human history

Te katau te nana. Waist ornament of coconut shell discs. This is made up of three components; te kora (sennit cord), te nana (coconut shell discs) and glass beads. It is a single stranded piece, formed by tying together the ends of two particular two-ply te kora. These are used to thread numerous te nana, which are perforated at the centre. It is of various shades of its natural, dark brown colour. They have been drilled or cut from a larger piece, resulting in relatively large circumference and thin depth. Four glass beads of a light blue colour are also strung on, a unique element of this te katau te nana. Its full length is measured at 855mm.
