Te katau te nana

human history

Te katau te nana. Waist ornament of coconut shell discs. This is made up of three components; te kora (sennit cord), te nana (coconut shell discs) and glass beads. This is a double stranded piece. Te kora is constructed using the two-ply technique. These are used to thread numerous te nana, which are perforated at the centre. Te nana are of various shades of its natural, dark brown colour. They have been drilled or cut from a larger piece, showing thin depth and relatively large discs in circumference. Simultaneously, eight beads of cobalt blue colour are also threaded on, a unique feature of this te katau te nana.
