Te tanai

human history

Te tanai. Hafted adze tool. Clam shell adze blade. This is an adze blade. It is a component of a tool used in cutting hard materials. It has been carved from te aubunga (clam shell; tridacna gigas). It is triangular in shape. It tapers outwards in depth from the sharp edge that would make contact when in use. The surface is made up of finely waved ridges that define the shell's lines of growth. The base of the blade is white with varying grey areas. A circular cavity features in the centre of the blade. The border of the base is flat and smooth. The centre of the base is concave.
