Te kumete

human history

Te kumete. Wooden receptacle. This is a carved wooden dish. It has been made from itai wood (Calophyllum inophyllum). It is low in height and long in form. It presents the cross section of an ovoid shape. The large oval cavity concaves entirely upon the interior and then presents a flat base on which it stands upon the exterior. At opposite ends of the rim, nodes have been carved out as part of the entirety of the kumete. A large crack covered with a dark brown resin features to the side of the cavity. Cracks are also present amongst the kumete. The sides are thin in depth and the surface texture is mostly smooth and mid brown in colour.
