Aviti

human history

Aviti. Bonito fishing lure. This 'aviti is constructed from a light yellow parau (pearl shell) shank and a sharpened point of ivi (bone) secured together with fibre cord lashing. The shank is cut into a somewhat rectangular shape along three sides and polished to maximum glossy sheen from the central thicker section of parau (pearl shell) including the hinge. The hinge has a perforation through which taura tuaina (twine) is secured along the length and attaches to the bone point lashed at the thinner end of the shank with twine. The ivi point is off-white in colour. A hackle of boar bristle is attached to the back of the point, on the outward-facing side of the shank. The bristle is longer at one side than the other. The 'aviti has a long length of natural-coloured tuaina attached for suspension and as fishing line.
