Kai n taura

human history

Kai n taura. Suspension hook. This is an implement used for domestic purposes such as hanging roki (blinds, screens). It has been obtained from te ngea (iron wood; pemphis scidula). Its natural growth has been retained and utilised for its bend in the hook. The end of the bend has been tapered to form the hook part. Some hafted furrows can be seen across the convex of its bend. The surface texture shows where the exterior has been hafted. The wood is dark brown in colour. The top of the shank shows where a gauge has been hafted out for positioning a thick coil of te kora. Te kora is dark brown in colour and varies in ply thickness. The coil extends out to form a short line that features an eye at the end.
