Wedding basket

human history

Right angle plaiting; four cornered square base but with basket sides flaring out from the base. Three-ply braids at each corner with incorporated bast left out as decoration. Plaiting in check from pandanus with complex overlaid pattern in black banana. Turmeric paint. Used during a marriage in June, 1992. The baskets, containing food were carried in the crook of the bride's arms when she was taken to her husband's house by her family. People displayed their association by supplying the baskets, of which there were two; the other is unpainted and remains with the bride.
