Fa'alautaliga
Fa'alautaliga. Ear-shaped club. This fa'alautaliga is made from one piece of toa (iron wood). The handle of this fa'alautaliga is very thin in comparison to the blade and has four sides. The handle flares to a wide flat blade with a round edge. The blade is the same deep dark brown colour as the handle and is adorned with mamanu (Samoan decorative motifs). These mamanu are composed of triangular indents and cover both sides of the entire blade. Aside from the mamanu the blade itself is very smooth. The fa'alautaliga is an 'au'upega (weapon of war) characterised by a large flattened blade. The name fa'alautaliga refers to the shape of the blade. Fa'a is the Samoan word meaning like, or, the shape of. Lautaliga is the Samoan word for earlobe. The blade can be described as being fa'alaufa'i, the shape of ear lobes. Depending on the length of its handle, fa'alautaliga could be used with one or two hands.
