Mahurangi Heads. Mrs Brown and Mrs Lushington

documentary heritage

Two women in late Victorian dress on the shoreline with a yacht propped up behind. The standing woman (Mrs Brown) holding a bag wears a white ruffled bonnet, the other woman (Mrs Lushington) sits on a pile of wood, with a small dog on her lap. The propped up yacht is turned on its side, the decking and winch visible. Behind it is another yacht with a mast and a slipway. A steep wooded bank inclines beyond.

Henry Winkelmann, photographer and entrepreneur, was an adventurer with a love of the sea. He travelled widely in New Zealand and the Pacific. A shipping agent and an enthusiast for yacht racing, he also supplemented his income by supplying photographs for publications and postcards. He captured the commercial and recreational life of Auckland up to the First World War.

Mrs Lushington's charlady, Mrs Brown, is the standing figure. Behind them is the Lushington's damaged yatch 'Muritai' which the Coastal Steamship Company negotiated to buy, the agreement is now in the National Archives. Winkelmann : images of early New Zealand / Vivian Edwards.
