    • Gerald Shaw was the brother of Eugene L. Shaw, of Paeroa, New Zealand. AWMM
    • 'Two Railway Men Killed. How They Died'
Major G. Barclay, of the New Zealand Engineers, in a letter from France, writes as follows: I have just got a few particulars with respect to the death of two members of the New Zealand Railway Service, namely Private G. E. Shaw and E. W. Gambling, of the 1st Battalion, Auckland Infantry. Both lads, at the time of their enlistment, were on the staff of the Morrinsville Station, and were well known in the Auckland District. On the night of the 10th July, a somewhat severe bombardment took place. Shaw, Gambling, and another comrade were occupying a dug-out in the trenches when a German high-explosive shell came over and landed right on top of their shelter crushing it in, and bringing the occupants what must have been instantaneous death. Both lads were held in high esteem by the members of the Battalion."
